Isatis tinctoria

Woad is a hardy biennial herb best known as one of the oldest natural sources of blue dye. Cultivated for centuries across Europe and western Asia, its leaves were traditionally fermented to produce the distinctive blue pigment long before indigo became widely available. In its second year, the plant sends up tall stems topped with masses of bright yellow flowers that attract bees and other beneficial insects. An attractive addition to cottage gardens and dye gardens, woad is both ornamental and historically significant.

Approximately 250–350 seeds per gram

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed 5–10 mm deep into well-drained soil in full sun. Keep the soil evenly moist during germination and thin seedlings to 30–45 cm apart. Plants form a leafy rosette in their first year before flowering in the second season. Harvest mature leaves as required for traditional natural dye production.

Not available for WA. Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety.
