A nutritious leafy green vegetable well suited to warmer areas. Also known as Red Stripe Leaf or Tampala, this Chinese spinach produces attractive green leaves with a red splash through the centre. Fast growing and best grown with successive sowings. Harvest the whole plant while young to avoid bitterness and toughness. Young leaves have a sweet, tangy flavour and should be cooked before eating to reduce oxalates and nitrates.

Tropics: Early spring onwards
Subtropics: Spring to summer
Mild climates: Late spring to summer
Cold climates: After frost has passed
Planting / Sowing
Sow directly into well-drained soil in full sun once temperatures have warmed. Sow seed shallowly and keep soil moist until germination. Succession sow for continuous harvest. Harvest whole plants while young for best flavour and texture.
Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
