Stachys officinalis

Betony is a hardy perennial herb long valued in traditional European herbal medicine and cottage gardens. Growing to around 50 cm tall, it produces striking spikes of rich purple flowers from late spring through to late summer that attract bees and other beneficial pollinators. The aromatic leaves and flowers can be harvested fresh or dried to make a refreshing, naturally caffeine-free herbal tea. Frost hardy and easy to grow, Betony thrives in moist, well-drained soil and has been cultivated for centuries for both its ornamental beauty and traditional medicinal uses.

Approximately 800–1,000 seeds per gram
Approximately 50 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to July
Subtropics: March to August
Mild climates: September to November or March to May
Cold climates: September to December after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of a moist, well-drained seed-raising mix or cover only lightly with fine soil, as light assists germination. Keep consistently moist until seedlings emerge. Transplant into a position in full sun to partial shade, spacing plants 30–40 cm apart. Betony prefers fertile, moisture-retentive soil and will establish into an attractive, long-lived clump that can be harvested regularly for leaves and flowers.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
