Phaseolus vulgaris

Phaseolus vulgaris var. nanus

An old heirloom bush bean dating to before the 1850s, producing slender, dark green pods to around 15 cm. Pods are nearly round, stringless, and tender, making them ideal for fresh eating. ‘Black Valentine’ is a high yielding variety with a harvest window of approximately 65 to 70 days. Also known as dwarf, French, or snap bean, it belongs to one of the most widely grown vegetable groups in the world. Originally from South and Central America, beans were cultivated as early as 500 B.C. and introduced to France by 1535. Bush beans are rich in vitamins A, B, and C and are valued for their productivity and ease of growing.

Approximately 15 seeds per packet
Seed count: approximately 2 to 4 seeds per gram

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: March to August
Subtropics: September to March
Mild climates: October to March
Cold climates: November to February

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly into well drained soil in a warm, sunny position after the risk of frost has passed. Sow seed 3 to 5 cm deep and space plants 20 to 25 cm apart, with rows 45 to 60 cm apart. Use successive sowings while conditions remain frost free to extend the harvest period. Bush beans grow well in most soils provided drainage is good and perform best in near neutral soil conditions. Avoid waterlogged sites.
