Vigna unguiculata var. sesquipedalis

Black Seeded Snake Bean is a vigorous, tall-climbing bean that thrives in warm conditions, producing exceptionally long, slender, stringless pods. The tender pods commonly reach 30–50 cm long and are best harvested while young, before the seeds inside begin to swell, for the finest flavour and texture.

The entire young pod can be eaten fresh or cooked and is excellent in stir-fries, curries, salads and other Asian dishes. For the best harvest, cut rather than pull the pods from the vine to avoid damaging the productive climbing stems.

Snake beans have a long history in Asian agriculture and were grown in Australia by early Chinese settlers. Adaptable across a range of warm climates and useful in greenhouses, plants are productive through hot weather and show good resistance to bean fly.

Approximately 12 seeds per packet.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: September–April
Subtropics: September–March
Mild climates: October–February
Cold climates: November–January, after frost risk has passed

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 2–3 cm deep directly where plants are to grow once the soil is warm. Space plants approximately 15–20 cm apart with 60–100 cm between rows and provide a tall, sturdy trellis or other climbing support.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil and maintain consistent moisture during flowering and pod development. Harvest pods regularly at around 30 cm long while they are still slender and tender to encourage continued production.

Maturity: approximately 70–90 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
