Glycine max

Black Soy Bean is a productive heirloom variety producing striking black seeds with a creamy white interior. The upright bush plants grow to around 1 metre tall and yield heavily with pods that dry naturally on the plant. Black soy beans have a rich, slightly sweeter flavour than yellow soy beans and can be cooked in much the same way as other dried beans. They are excellent in soups, stews, curries, salads and grain bowls, and are also traditionally used in East Asian cuisine. As a legume, soy beans also help improve soil fertility by fixing nitrogen.

Approximately 5–7 seeds per gram
Approximately 15 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to August (dry season)
Subtropics: September to January
Mild climates: October to December
Cold climates: Spring after frost

Planting / Sowing

Direct sow seed 30–40 mm deep into warm, well-drained soil in a sunny position after the danger of frost has passed. Space plants 15–20 cm apart with rows 50–75 cm apart. Keep well watered during flowering and pod development. Allow pods to mature and dry on the plant before harvesting the beans for storage. Dried beans require soaking before cooking and should be cooked thoroughly before eating.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
