Beta vulgaris

Chioggia Beetroot, often known as Candy Stripe Beet, is a beautiful Italian heirloom variety renowned for its striking red and white concentric rings. Beneath its rosy-pink skin lies crisp, sweet flesh with a mild flavour and attractive candy-striped pattern that is revealed when sliced. The unique colouring makes it a favourite for salads, roasting, pickling and gourmet presentation.

In addition to its colourful roots, Chioggia produces tender green leaves that can be harvested young as baby salad greens or cooked like silverbeet. The foliage has a mild, pleasant flavour and provides an additional harvest while the roots develop.

Originating from the coastal town of Chioggia near Venice, this heirloom variety has been grown in Italy since the nineteenth century. It is valued for its sweetness, attractive appearance and reliable performance in the home garden.

Subtropics: February to September
Mild climates: February to October
Cold climates: September to April

Planting / Sowing

For baby leaf production, sow seed densely in trays, boxes or garden beds and harvest leaves when they reach 8–15 cm tall. For mature roots, sow seed directly into prepared soil 10–15 mm deep and thin seedlings to 10 cm apart. Beetroot performs best when direct sown and prefers not to have its roots disturbed.

Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Keep soil consistently moist for rapid growth and good root development. Harvest roots from approximately 52–65 days after sowing, or earlier as tender baby beets.

Baby Leaf and Microgreens offer a simple and nutritious way to add fresh homegrown greens, vitamins and minerals to your daily diet.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
