Beta vulgaris

Sugarbeet is a distinctive white-rooted beet grown for its exceptionally high sugar content, crisp texture and impressive productivity. Producing large conical roots with creamy white flesh, it offers a mild, sweet flavour without the earthy notes or deep pigments associated with traditional red beetroot varieties.

Originally developed as a commercial sugar crop, Sugarbeet has been cultivated throughout Europe and North America for more than two centuries and remains one of the world's most important sources of sugar production. In the home garden it serves as a versatile dual-purpose crop, suitable for cooking, stock feed and fresh use.

The large roots can be roasted, boiled or grated raw into salads, while their mild flavour makes them particularly useful in dishes where the strong colour and flavour of red beetroot may be undesirable. Plants produce vigorous leafy tops and demonstrate excellent cold tolerance, continuing to perform well through cooler weather.

Planting / Sowing

For baby leaf production, sow seed densely in trays, boxes or garden beds and harvest leaves when they reach 8–15 cm tall. For mature roots, sow seed directly into prepared soil 15–20 mm deep and thin seedlings to 20 cm apart once established.

Grow in full sun in deep, fertile, well-drained soil free from stones and compaction. Consistent moisture throughout the growing season will encourage the development of large, well-formed roots. Harvest roots once they reach the desired size and use fresh, store for later use, or feed to livestock.

Baby Leaf and Microgreens offer a simple and nutritious way to add fresh homegrown greens, vitamins and minerals to your daily diet.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
