Brassica oleracea var. capitata

Kalibos is a distinctive red cabbage producing beautiful pointed heads with deep burgundy-purple leaves. Combining the elegant shape of a pointed cabbage with the rich colour of a traditional red cabbage, it forms relatively small, compact heads that are particularly well suited to smaller gardens.

The crisp leaves are exceptionally sweet and tender, making Kalibos excellent finely shredded into salads and coleslaw. It is equally delicious lightly steamed, sautéed, braised, roasted or fermented, with the striking purple-red foliage adding colour to both fresh and cooked dishes.

Hardy and adaptable, Kalibos performs reliably even in relatively poor soils and challenging growing conditions, although the best heads will develop in fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Its compact size allows closer spacing than many larger cabbage varieties.

Approximately 50 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Late summer to winter
Mild climates: Late summer to winter and early spring
Cold climates: Spring to summer

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly or raise in trays, approximately 5–10 mm deep. Keep consistently moist during germination and establishment.

Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 35–45 cm apart in full sun and well-drained soil. Maintain regular moisture while heads are developing and harvest once heads are firm and well formed.

If saving seed, remember that cabbage will cross-pollinate readily with other compatible Brassica oleracea varieties, so adequate isolation is required to maintain the variety true to type.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
