Brassica oleracea var. sabauda

Savoy Drumhead Perfection is a classic heirloom Savoy Cabbage producing broad, compact heads weighing up to approximately 3 kg. The deeply crinkled, dark green leaves are beautifully tender, forming dense, substantial heads with the distinctive texture for which Savoy cabbages are prized.

Considered one of the finest-flavoured cabbages, Drumhead Perfection has a particularly mild, sweet flavour and is notably less sulphurous when cooked than many conventional cabbage varieties. The tender leaves are excellent steamed, braised or sautéed, wrapped around fillings, shredded into soups and stir-fries, or enjoyed finely sliced in salads and slaws.

Exceptionally cold tolerant, this is an excellent variety for growing through the cooler months and can withstand frosty conditions once established. Plants perform best in full sun with rich, fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture as the large heads develop.

Approximately 120 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter in cooler locations
Subtropics: Late summer to winter
Mild climates: Late summer to winter and early spring
Cold climates: Spring to summer

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly or raise in trays, approximately 5–10 mm deep. Keep consistently moist during germination and establishment.

Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 50–60 cm apart in full sun and rich, well-drained soil. Maintain regular moisture as the heads develop. Harvest at approximately 90 days, or as soon as the heads feel firm and solid when gently squeezed.

If saving seed, remember that Savoy Cabbage will cross-pollinate readily with other compatible Brassica oleracea varieties, so adequate isolation is required to maintain the variety true to type.

Maturity: approximately 90 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
