Daucus carota subsp. sativus

Atomic Red is a striking heirloom Carrot producing slender, coral to deep red roots reaching approximately 20 cm long. The unusual colouring comes from naturally occurring lycopene, the same carotenoid pigment responsible for the red colour of tomatoes and watermelon.

While the roots can be eaten raw, Atomic Red really comes into its own when cooked. Heat deepens the colour and develops the flavour, making these carrots particularly good for roasting, steaming, braising and adding to soups and other cooked dishes. The contrasting red exterior and warm orange-red interior also make an impressive addition to mixed root vegetable dishes.

Fast growing and easy to cultivate, Atomic Red performs best in full sun with loose, friable, well-drained soil. Avoid freshly manured or heavily compacted ground, which can cause roots to fork or become misshapen.

Approximately 200 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Most of the year, with best results autumn to spring
Mild climates: Spring to autumn
Cold climates: Spring to early autumn, avoiding periods of heavy frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, approximately 5–10 mm deep. Carrots dislike transplanting. Keep the soil surface consistently moist until germination.

Thin seedlings to approximately 2–5 cm apart once established, using young thinnings as baby carrots. Maintain even moisture while roots develop and keep beds free from competing weeds.

Harvest at approximately 20 cm long or earlier for tender young roots.

Maturity: approximately 70 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
