Daucus carota subsp. sativus

Muscade is a distinctive heirloom Carrot with North African origins, prized for its exceptionally sweet, richly flavoured roots and crisp texture. The name Muscade, meaning “nutmeg” in French, hints at the subtle aromatic quality traditionally associated with this unusual variety.

A mid-season Carrot, Muscade produces blocky, almost cylindrical orange roots reaching approximately 18 cm long. The crisp, sweet flesh is particularly good eaten fresh, making it an excellent choice for salads, crudités and snacking straight from the garden. It is equally useful roasted, steamed, pickled or added to cooked dishes.

Muscade is also valued for its tendency to resist bolting, helping extend the useful harvest period. Adaptable across a range of soil types, it performs particularly well in cooler conditions and produces the best-shaped roots in fertile, loose, well-drained soil.

Approximately 200 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Spring to autumn
Cold climates: Spring to early autumn, avoiding periods of heavy frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, approximately 5–10 mm deep. Carrots dislike transplanting. Keep the soil surface consistently moist until germination.

Thin seedlings to approximately 3–5 cm apart once established, using young thinnings as baby carrots. Maintain even moisture as roots develop and avoid fresh manure, which can encourage forking and misshapen roots.

Harvest once roots have developed their characteristic cylindrical shape and reached approximately 18 cm long, or earlier for smaller, tender roots.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
