Daucus carota subsp. sativus

Royal Chantenay is a classic heirloom Carrot producing broad, substantial roots with a large diameter and tapered shape. The rich orange flesh is fine-textured, crisp and sweet, making this a reliable all-purpose variety for both fresh eating and cooking.

Its shorter, broad-rooted form makes Royal Chantenay particularly well suited to heavier, clay-based or shallower soils where long, slender carrots can struggle to develop properly. The substantial roots are excellent roasted, steamed, glazed, juiced or added to soups and stews, while younger roots are sweet and crisp enough for fresh eating.

Royal Chantenay is also an excellent storage Carrot. Mature roots hold particularly well through winter when harvested and stored under cool conditions, making it a useful variety for gardeners wanting to preserve a larger seasonal crop.

Approximately 400 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Most of the year, with best results autumn to spring
Mild climates: Spring to autumn
Cold climates: Spring to early autumn, avoiding periods of heavy frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, approximately 5–10 mm deep. Carrots dislike transplanting. Keep the soil surface consistently moist until germination.

Thin seedlings to approximately 3–5 cm apart once established, using young thinnings as baby carrots. Although particularly tolerant of heavier soils, loosening compacted ground before sowing will encourage smoother, better-shaped roots.

Harvest young for tender fresh carrots or allow roots to mature fully for winter storage.

Maturity: approximately 65–80 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
