Daucus carota subsp. sativus

San Valerio, also known as Saint Valery, is a historic French heirloom Carrot with a cultivation history stretching back centuries. Despite its Italian-sounding name, the variety is associated with France and became particularly well known through the great French seed house Vilmorin-Andrieux during the 19th century. It later crossed the Atlantic, appearing in American seed catalogues by the late 1800s.

A classic main-season variety, San Valerio produces long, slender, deep orange roots with a crisp texture and rich, sweet, earthy flavour. The substantial roots are excellent for fresh eating and particularly good for juicing, as well as roasting, steaming, soups, stews and preserving.

Reliable and adaptable, San Valerio performs across a range of soils and is particularly well suited to cooler growing conditions. Its long roots develop best in deeply cultivated, loose, friable soil free from stones and fresh manure.

Approximately 300 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Spring to autumn
Cold climates: Spring to early autumn, avoiding periods of heavy frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, approximately 5–10 mm deep. Carrots dislike transplanting. Keep the soil surface consistently moist until germination.

Thin seedlings to approximately 3–5 cm apart once established, using young thinnings as baby carrots. Prepare the soil deeply to accommodate the long roots and maintain even moisture throughout growth for tender, evenly shaped carrots.

Harvest once roots have reached a useful size and developed their characteristic deep orange colour.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
