Cichorium intybus

Catalogna Chicory is a traditional Italian heirloom grown for its long, deeply cut dandelion-like leaves and thick, succulent stalks. Fast growing and highly productive, it is harvested for its tender young greens, which have a distinctive flavour often described as mildly bitter with subtle asparagus notes. The crisp stalks and leaves are equally suited to fresh salads, stir-fries, soups or lightly sautéed dishes.

A cool-season crop, Catalogna develops its best flavour and texture in autumn and spring, producing abundant leafy growth over a long harvest period. Regular picking encourages fresh new leaves, making it an excellent choice for continuous harvesting throughout the season.

Approximately 600–700 seeds per gram
Approximately 300 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to August
Subtropics: March to August
Mild climates: March to September
Cold climates: September to November and February to April

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed 5 mm deep directly into fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position. Thin or transplant seedlings to 25–30 cm apart. Keep the soil consistently moist to encourage tender growth and reduce bitterness. Begin harvesting young leaves from around 52 days, or allow plants to mature fully over 83 days for larger leaves and succulent stalks.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
