Allium schoenoprasum

One of the most useful and easy-to-grow culinary herbs, Chives produce slender, hollow green leaves with a delicate onion flavour that complements a wide range of dishes. A perennial favourite in herb gardens, they provide a reliable harvest throughout much of the year and are equally at home in garden beds, containers and kitchen gardens.

The leaves are delicious in dips, salads, soups, omelettes, casseroles and savoury baking, while the attractive mauve-purple flower heads are also edible and make a beautiful garnish. Rich in nutrients and easy to maintain, Chives are an indispensable herb for home cooks.

In the garden, Chives are valued as a companion plant and are traditionally grown near carrots and other vegetables. Their flowers attract bees and beneficial insects, helping to support a healthy and productive garden ecosystem.

Approximately 200 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: March to August
Subtropics: Autumn and spring
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring to early autumn

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed 5mm deep in trays or directly where plants are to grow. Keep soil moist during germination. Plant in full sun to part shade in fertile, well-drained soil. Chives grow best when regularly watered and benefit from occasional division of established clumps every few years. Space plants approximately 20–30cm apart and harvest leaves regularly to encourage fresh growth.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
