Solanum melongena

Ping Tung Long is a beautiful Taiwanese heirloom Eggplant producing exceptionally long, slender fruits with brilliant magenta-purple skin. Fruits measure around 3 cm wide and can reach an impressive 40 cm long, often hanging in elegant clusters from compact, productive plants.

The fine-textured flesh is sweet, mild and tender with thin skin, making this an excellent variety for cooking without peeling. The slender fruits cook quickly and evenly and are particularly good in stir-fries, curries and braised dishes, as well as grilled, roasted or fried.

Ping Tung Long takes its name from Pingtung in southern Taiwan, a warm agricultural region where eggplants and other subtropical vegetables thrive. The variety has become popular well beyond Taiwan for its combination of excellent flavour, striking appearance and generous production.

Despite the extraordinary length of the fruits, plants have a relatively compact habit and are heavy yielding, making them a good choice where garden space is limited. Regular harvesting encourages continued flowering and fruit production over a long warm season.

Approximately 40 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Most of the year, avoiding the coolest period
Subtropics: Late winter to summer
Mild climates: Spring to summer
Cold climates: Start indoors in late winter to spring and transplant after all danger of frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 5 mm deep into trays or pots and keep warm and consistently moist. Eggplant germinates best with soil temperatures around 24–30°C.

Transplant seedlings once the weather and soil have warmed and all danger of frost has passed. Space plants approximately 50–60 cm apart in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil.

Water consistently during flowering and fruit development. Harvest while fruits are slender, glossy and brightly coloured for the sweetest flavour and most tender texture. Fruits do not need to reach their full 40 cm before harvesting and are excellent picked younger. Cut from the plant with secateurs rather than pulling.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
