Moluccella laevis

Bells of Ireland is a distinctive annual grown for its tall, elegant flower spikes lined with unusual green, bell-shaped calyces surrounding tiny white flowers. Despite the name, the species originates from the eastern Mediterranean rather than Ireland, with its common name likely inspired by its fresh green colour and traditional association with good luck.

Reaching impressive heights, the upright stems add structure and contrast to cottage gardens, mixed borders and cutting gardens. Bells of Ireland is particularly prized as a cut flower, with the long stems and architectural green bells providing an unusual addition to fresh bouquets and floral arrangements. The stems can also be dried for long-lasting arrangements.

Plants perform best in cooler conditions and appreciate a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Autumn and early spring
Cold climates: Spring after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly or into trays, covering seed only lightly. Germination can be slow and somewhat irregular. A period of chilling before sowing may help improve germination.

Transplant seedlings carefully once established, spacing approximately 25–30 cm apart. Grow in full sun and provide support in exposed positions, as the tall flowering stems can be vulnerable to strong winds.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
