Leontopodium alpinum

Edelweiss is an iconic alpine perennial native to the limestone mountains of Europe, where its distinctive woolly white, star-shaped flowers have become a symbol of endurance and natural beauty. Forming compact clumps of silvery foliage, it thrives in rocky, well-drained soils and is perfectly suited to rockeries, alpine gardens and containers. Its soft, velvety blooms make excellent fresh or dried flowers and are highly valued for their unique appearance.

Traditionally known in Germany as the "stomach plant", Edelweiss has a long history of use in European herbal medicine, where it was commonly prepared as an infusion with hot milk and honey to support digestive health. Modern research has identified antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds within the plant, contributing to its continued interest as a medicinal herb.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to June (cooler highland areas only)
Subtropics: March to May
Mild climates: March to June
Cold climates: February to April or 6 weeks before the first expected frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of a fine, free-draining seed-raising mix and gently press into the soil without covering, as light aids germination. Keep moist but not waterlogged. Grow in full sun in sharply drained, gritty or rocky soil, ideally with a neutral to alkaline pH. Once established, Edelweiss is highly frost tolerant but dislikes hot, humid conditions and poorly drained soils. Space plants 20–30 cm apart.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
