Tropaeolum majus

Jewel Mix Nasturtium is a compact, non-trailing bush variety producing a brilliant display of flowers in vibrant shades of yellow, orange, scarlet and red held proudly above the foliage throughout summer. Growing to approximately 40 cm tall, it is ideal for garden borders, containers, vegetable gardens and as a living groundcover.

Originally native to South America, particularly Peru, Nasturtium is also known as Indian Cress. Both the flowers and leaves are edible, offering a fresh peppery flavour and providing a colourful addition to salads, sandwiches and garnishes. The plant is naturally rich in vitamin C and has a long history of traditional use for its antiseptic properties.

Nasturtiums are highly valued as companion plants. They help attract pollinators and beneficial insects while acting as a trap crop for aphids and assisting in deterring certain pest insects. They are particularly useful when grown alongside cucurbits, brassicas, beans, tomatoes and potatoes. Their spreading habit also helps suppress weeds and protect soil moisture.

Easy to grow and rewarding for gardeners of all experience levels, Jewel Mix performs best in a sunny position and flowers most prolifically in moderately fertile, well-drained soil.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed directly where plants are to grow, 10–15 mm deep in a sunny to partly shaded position. Keep soil evenly moist during germination. Space plants 25–30 cm apart. Nasturtiums prefer well-drained soil and generally flower more abundantly when grown in soil that is not excessively rich. Regular harvesting of flowers and leaves will encourage continued growth and flowering.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
