Nigella damascena

Love In A Mist is a beautiful old-fashioned annual producing delicate flowers surrounded by finely divided, feathery foliage that gives the plant its distinctive mist-like appearance. Blooms appear in shades of blue, with occasional white and softer tones, creating an airy display through cottage gardens, borders and cutting gardens.

After flowering, plants develop unusual inflated seed pods that are highly decorative and excellent for dried floral arrangements. The flowers themselves also make lovely cut flowers and are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.

Easy to grow and quick to establish, Nigella performs best in cooler conditions and full sun with well-drained soil. Plants readily self-seed when mature pods are left in the garden, often returning naturally the following season.

Seed count: approximately 450 seeds/g
Approximately 300 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Autumn and spring
Cold climates: Spring, or autumn where winters are mild

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, as Nigella generally prefers not to be transplanted. Cover seed lightly with approximately 3–5 mm of soil and keep moist during germination.

Thin seedlings to approximately 15–20 cm apart in full sun and well-drained soil. Succession sowing every few weeks can extend the flowering period. Allow selected seed pods to mature if flowers are wanted for natural self-seeding or dried arrangements.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
