Nigella damascena

Miss Jekyll Blue is a classic cottage garden annual producing clear sky-blue flowers surrounded by finely cut, feathery foliage and delicate, mist-like bracts. The soft, airy growth brings beautiful texture and movement to garden beds, borders and cutting gardens.

A reliable and long-flowering variety, Miss Jekyll Blue makes an excellent cut flower and is particularly lovely in informal bouquets. After flowering, distinctive inflated seed pods develop, providing additional garden interest and making an excellent addition to dried floral arrangements.

Easy to grow and well suited to cooler conditions, Nigella readily self-seeds when mature pods are left on the plants, often returning naturally year after year.

Approximately 300 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Autumn and early spring
Cold climates: Early spring, or autumn where winters are mild

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to flower in autumn or early spring, as Nigella develops a taproot and dislikes transplanting. Cover seed lightly with approximately 3–5 mm of soil and keep moist during germination.

Thin seedlings to approximately 15–20 cm apart in full sun and well-drained soil. Allow selected seed pods to mature if you would like plants to self-seed or wish to harvest the pods for dried arrangements.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
