Schizanthus × wisetonensis

Angel Wings Mixed is a charming annual producing masses of intricate, orchid-like flowers in a beautiful mixture of cream, pink, violet, blue and rose, often splashed, spotted and marked with contrasting colours. Also known as Poor Man’s Orchid or Butterfly Flower, the elaborate blooms are held above delicate, fern-like foliage on compact plants reaching approximately 35 cm tall.

The abundant flowers create a spectacular display in cottage gardens, borders and containers and also make excellent cut flowers. Despite their exotic appearance, plants are relatively easy to grow and flower generously during the cooler months.

Schizanthus prefers mild conditions, fertile, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Plants appreciate protection from strong winds and intense heat, particularly as the weather warms.

Seed count: approximately 1,500 seeds/g
Approximately 400 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter in cooler locations
Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Autumn to spring
Cold climates: Spring, or autumn where winters are mild

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly or raise in trays, covering the fine seed lightly with soil or seed-raising mix. Keep consistently moist during germination but avoid waterlogging.

Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 20–25 cm apart in full sun to partial shade. Choose a sheltered position and remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continued flowering.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
