Swainsona formosa

Sturt’s Desert Pea is one of Australia’s most spectacular native wildflowers, producing distinctive blood-red, leaf-like flowers with glossy dark centres. Native to the arid and semi-arid regions of inland Australia, the flowers can reach approximately 90 mm long and are carried along sprawling stems that may trail for up to 2 m.

The floral emblem of South Australia, Sturt’s Desert Pea creates a remarkable display when given the dry, open conditions it prefers. The striking blooms can also be used as cut flowers. Plants are naturally adapted to harsh environments and perform best in full sun, alkaline to neutral soil and exceptionally good drainage.

Although perennial in its natural habitat, Sturt’s Desert Pea can be challenging to maintain in wetter climates and is often treated as a short-lived perennial or annual in cultivation. Avoid overwatering, particularly once plants are established.

Approximately 30 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Generally unsuitable for humid tropical conditions
Subtropics: Spring to summer in very well-drained conditions
Mild climates: Spring to summer
Cold climates: Spring after frost

Planting / Sowing

Seed has a hard outer coat and requires scarification to assist germination. Place seed in hot to boiling water for approximately 5–10 minutes, then rinse in cool water and sow immediately into a sandy, very free-draining growing mix.

Cover lightly and keep just moist during germination. In cool weather, covering the container for approximately five days can help maintain suitable conditions. Do not overwater, as seedlings and established plants are particularly susceptible to excessive moisture and poor drainage.

Choose a permanent position in full sun with excellent drainage and plenty of room for the trailing stems to spread.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
