Lathyrus odoratus

Old Spice is a beautiful heirloom Sweetpea prized for its exceptionally rich fragrance and old-fashioned cottage garden character. This variety produces highly scented red flowers with distinctive white striping, carried on long stems that make an excellent addition to cut flower arrangements.

A vigorous climber reaching approximately 2 m tall, Old Spice is more heat tolerant than many modern Sweetpea varieties, helping to extend its flowering season as conditions begin to warm. It is ideal for growing over trellises, fences and arches or amongst other plants in cottage and cutting gardens.

Sweetpeas perform best in full sun with rich, fertile, well-drained soil and regular moisture. Frequent picking encourages continued flower production and prevents plants putting energy into developing seed pods.

Approximately 50 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter in cooler locations
Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Autumn to early spring
Cold climates: Autumn or late winter to spring

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly where plants are to grow, approximately 2–3 cm deep. Alternatively, raise in individual pots or cells and transplant carefully while young. Keep soil consistently moist during germination.

Space plants approximately 15–20 cm apart and provide a trellis, fence or other sturdy support for climbing. Regularly pick flowers and remove developing seed pods to encourage continued blooming.

Sweetpea seeds and other parts of the plant are not edible and should not be confused with edible garden peas.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
