Anchusa officinalis

Also known as Common Bugloss, Anchusa officinalis is a traditional medicinal herb with striking spikes of vivid blue flowers that are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. Native to Europe, it has a long history of use in traditional herbal practice. The root was once prepared as a decoction and regarded as a blood-cleansing remedy, while the herb was also traditionally used as a diuretic and to encourage perspiration during febrile illnesses. Today, Common Bugloss is primarily grown for its ornamental beauty, wildlife value and historical significance as an example of early European herbal medicine.

Approximately 250–350 seeds per gram
Approximately 45 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to July
Subtropics: March to August
Mild climates: September to November or March to May
Cold climates: Late spring to early summer after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed shallowly into well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, covering only lightly with soil. Keep moist until germination. In warm areas, sow in early spring, while in cooler regions wait until late spring once the risk of frost has passed. Space plants approximately 40–60 cm apart to allow room for mature plants, which typically reach 60–100 cm in height and form broad, attractive clumps.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
