Pimpinella anisum

A fragrant annual growing to around 45 cm, anise is valued for its sweet, spicy flavour and versatility in both the kitchen and the apothecary. The seeds are traditionally used to flavour cakes, breads, soups, and stews, while the fresh leaves can be added to salads. Anise is also an organic source of phosphorus and has a long history of medicinal use, particularly for easing colic in infants and helping to relieve nausea.

Anise prefers warmth and sunshine and can be slow to germinate, rewarding patience with delicate foliage and aromatic seed heads later in the season.

Approximately 200 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)
Tropics: April to June
Subtropics: September to November
Mild climates: October to December
Cold climates: Late spring to early summer

Planting / Sowing
Sow seed directly into well drained soil in a warm, sunny position. Sow in spring or summer once soil temperatures have warmed and frost risk has passed. Sow seed 1 cm deep and keep soil evenly moist during germination, which may take longer than many herbs. Space plants 20 to 30 cm apart and avoid transplanting, as anise prefers to grow where it is sown.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
