Chelidonium majus

Greater Celandine is a hardy herbaceous perennial with deeply divided blue-green foliage and cheerful yellow flowers that bloom from spring through summer. Native to Europe and western Asia, it readily naturalises in lightly shaded gardens and woodland settings. When the stems are broken, they exude a distinctive orange-yellow latex that has a long history of traditional use in herbal medicine.

Traditionally, the fresh latex was applied externally to warts and corns, while preparations of the herb were used to support digestive function, particularly for stomach discomfort and conditions affecting the liver and biliary system. Greater Celandine is a potent medicinal herb and should only be used under the guidance of a suitably qualified healthcare practitioner, as inappropriate use may cause adverse effects.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of a moist, well-drained seed-raising mix, covering only lightly as light can assist germination. Keep consistently moist and place in a cool position until seedlings emerge. Transplant into a partly shaded position with fertile, well-drained soil, spacing plants 30–40 cm apart. Plants may self-seed readily if spent flowers are left to mature.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
