Clary Sage is a striking short-lived perennial, often grown as a biennial, producing tall spikes of showy white to lilac flowers in its second year. Reaching around 1 m in height, it is native to the northern Mediterranean and is well suited to cottage gardens, herb borders and pollinator-friendly plantings. Once established, it is drought tolerant, thrives in poor soils and requires very little maintenance. The highly aromatic foliage and flowers attract bees and other beneficial insects throughout the flowering season.
Clary Sage has a long history of use as both a culinary and medicinal herb and is widely cultivated for its fragrant essential oil. Traditionally, it has been used to support menstrual and menopausal health, soothe digestive discomfort, promote relaxation and ease feelings of stress and nervous tension. The leaves and flowers are edible and have been used to flavour foods, wines and liqueurs, while the essential oil is valued in perfumery and natural soaps.
