Primula veris

Cowslip is a charming perennial wildflower native to Europe, producing clusters of cheerful golden-yellow flowers on slender stems reaching around 25 cm tall. Blooming from late winter to early spring, the delicately fragrant flowers are often said to carry a sweet apricot-like scent. A favourite in cottage gardens, woodland plantings and naturalised areas, Cowslip thrives in cool conditions and provides an important early nectar source for bees and other pollinators.

Traditionally, the flowers have been used to prepare delicate herbal teas and have a long history of use in European herbal medicine. Their mild flavour and attractive appearance also make them a beautiful garnish for desserts and spring dishes.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to July
Subtropics: March to August
Mild climates: March to September
Cold climates: Autumn to spring

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of a moist, free-draining seed-raising mix and press gently into the soil without covering, as light assists germination. Fresh seed germinates most readily and may benefit from a period of cool temperatures. Keep consistently moist and transplant seedlings into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Space plants 20–30 cm apart and avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
