Cuminum cyminum

Cumin is a warm-season annual herb growing to around 15 cm tall, producing slender foliage and small white to pale pink flower umbels followed by aromatic seeds. One of the world's oldest cultivated spices, cumin is an essential ingredient in Indian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, North African and Latin American cuisines. The seeds can be used whole or ground, imparting a warm, earthy flavour to curries, spice blends, stews, breads and roasted vegetables. Lightly toasting the seeds before use enhances their rich aroma and flavour.

Approximately 90–110 seeds per gram
Approximately 170 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to August (dry season)
Subtropics: September to November
Mild climates: September to November
Cold climates: October to December after frost

Planting / Sowing

Direct sow seed 5–10 mm deep into fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered position once the weather has warmed. Cumin develops a taproot and is best sown where it is to grow. Space plants 15–20 cm apart and keep the soil evenly moist during establishment. Harvest seed heads once they turn brown and dry them thoroughly before storing.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
