Verbascum thapsus

Mullein is a striking biennial herb renowned for its tall flowering spikes and distinctive soft, velvety silver-green leaves. In its first year, the plant forms a large basal rosette of woolly foliage, followed by an impressive flowering stem in its second year that can reach 1.5–2 m tall, bearing masses of bright yellow flowers that attract bees and other pollinators.

For centuries, Mullein has been one of the most widely used herbs in traditional Western herbal medicine, particularly for supporting respiratory health. The leaves and flowers have traditionally been prepared as teas, infusions and other herbal preparations to soothe coughs, support healthy lung function and promote comfort during seasonal respiratory complaints. Mullein has also been valued for its calming properties and has been used traditionally to encourage relaxation and restful sleep.

A hardy and adaptable plant, Mullein thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating poor soils and dry conditions once established. Its architectural form makes it equally suitable for ornamental plantings, cottage gardens and medicinal herb gardens.

Planting / Sowing

Surface sow seed onto moist soil or seed-raising mix and press lightly into the surface, as light assists germination. Do not cover seed. Keep evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Transplant seedlings into a sunny position with well-drained soil, spacing plants 45–60 cm apart. Allow room for the large first-year rosette and eventual flowering spike. Once established, Mullein is highly drought tolerant and requires very little maintenance.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
