Plantago lanceolata

Commonly known as Ribwort Plantain or Narrowleaf Plantain, this hardy perennial herb is often found growing along roadsides, paddocks and other disturbed ground. Frequently dismissed as a weed, Plantain has a long history as both a nutritious food plant and an important medicinal herb. Its distinctive narrow leaves form a low-growing rosette, while slender flower spikes rise above the foliage throughout the growing season.

For centuries, Plantain has been valued in traditional herbal medicine for its soothing, cleansing and anti-inflammatory properties. The leaves have been prepared as teas, syrups and infusions to support respiratory and digestive health, while fresh leaves have traditionally been applied externally to minor skin irritations, insect bites, scratches and other everyday complaints. It is often considered one of the most useful first-aid plants found in nature.

Young leaves are edible and can be added to salads when tender, while older leaves are best cooked or used in herbal preparations. Rich in beneficial plant compounds, Plantain is an excellent addition to medicinal herb gardens, food forests and naturalised plantings.

Easy to grow and highly adaptable, Ribwort Plantain thrives in a wide range of soils and conditions, tolerating drought, poor soils and partial shade once established.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of moist soil or seed-raising mix and lightly press into place. Cover only very lightly, as seed benefits from exposure to light for germination. Keep evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Transplant or thin plants to 20–30 cm apart in a sunny or partly shaded position. Once established, Plantain requires very little care and readily self-seeds under favourable conditions.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety.
