Tanacetum cinerariifolium

Pyrethrum is a beautiful daisy-like flowering plant grown both for its ornamental appeal and its long-standing use as a natural source of insecticidal compounds. Producing masses of white flowers with bright yellow centres, it creates an attractive display in cottage gardens, borders and productive gardens while also attracting beneficial insects and pollinators.

Native to the Dalmatian region of Europe, Pyrethrum contains naturally occurring compounds known as pyrethrins, which have been used for generations as a botanical insecticide. The highest concentrations are found in the mature flower heads, which are harvested and dried for use in traditional garden preparations. Pyrethrins break down rapidly when exposed to sunlight and air, making them less persistent in the environment than many synthetic alternatives.

Traditionally, dried flower heads have been crushed and steeped to produce homemade insecticidal sprays for use against a range of garden pests. As with all insecticides, care should be taken to avoid spraying beneficial insects, particularly bees and other pollinators.

Easy to grow and rewarding, Pyrethrum thrives in sunny positions with well-drained soil and produces an abundance of flowers throughout the warmer months.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to July
Subtropics: March to August
Mild climates: August to April
Cold climates: September to January

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of moist seed-raising mix and lightly press into place. Cover only very lightly, as light assists germination. Keep evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Transplant into a sunny position with well-drained soil, spacing plants 30–40 cm apart. Remove spent flowers to encourage continued blooming and harvest mature flower heads once fully open for traditional insecticidal preparations.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
