Valeriana officinalis

Valerian is a graceful perennial herb prized for its medicinal properties, attractive fern-like foliage and clusters of delicately scented pale pink to white flowers. Growing between 50 and 100 cm tall, it produces elegant flower heads throughout summer that are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.

Used for centuries throughout Europe and Asia, Valerian is one of the most well-known herbs in traditional Western herbal medicine. It has long been valued for its calming properties and has traditionally been used to support relaxation, restful sleep, nervous tension and general wellbeing. While teas can be prepared from the aerial parts, the roots are considered the most potent part of the plant and are typically harvested after at least two years of growth when they have fully developed their medicinal qualities.

Beyond its herbal uses, Valerian is a valuable garden plant. Its flowers attract pollinators, while its extensive root system is believed to encourage soil health and support phosphorus cycling within the garden ecosystem. Earthworms are also said to be particularly attracted to the plant, making it a useful addition to productive and permaculture gardens.

Easy to grow and long-lived, Valerian thrives in fertile soils with reliable moisture and rewards gardeners with years of beauty and usefulness.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of moist seed-raising mix and lightly press into place. Cover only very lightly, as light assists germination. Keep evenly moist until seedlings emerge. Transplant into a sunny or partly shaded position with fertile, moisture-retentive soil, spacing plants 40–60 cm apart. Allow plants to establish for at least two years before harvesting roots for medicinal use.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
