Cichorium intybus

Forage Chicory is a highly nutritious, temperate perennial pasture herb valued for its exceptional summer production, deep taproot and excellent livestock performance. Growing to around 1.5 m tall when left ungrazed, it produces attractive lilac-blue flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators. Its extensive root system enables it to remain productive during dry periods while improving soil structure and accessing nutrients from deep within the soil profile.

Highly palatable and rich in minerals, forage chicory is well suited to grazing systems for cattle, sheep and other livestock. It is commonly managed in a similar manner to alfalfa but has the advantage of not causing bloat. Best persistence is achieved under rotational grazing rather than continuous heavy grazing. This cold-tolerant variety also performs well on moderately acidic soils, making it a versatile addition to mixed pasture systems.

Approximately 600–700 seeds per gram

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to July
Subtropics: March to May and August to September
Mild climates: March to May and August to October
Cold climates: September to November and February to April

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed 5–10 mm deep into a firm, well-prepared seedbed or direct drill into existing pasture. Suitable for autumn and spring sowing, with autumn to winter sowing recommended in tropical regions. Sow at approximately 5 kg per hectare as a pure stand or at appropriate lower rates when included in pasture mixes. Maintain good soil fertility and use rotational grazing to maximise persistence and productivity.

Not available for WA. Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety.
