Trifolium incarnatum

Crimson Clover is a fast-growing, upright temperate annual legume reaching approximately 60 cm tall. It produces lush green foliage followed by striking cylindrical flower heads, up to around 40 mm long, in a brilliant crimson red. Growth and flowering are particularly strong through spring.

An excellent green manure and cover crop, Crimson Clover produces abundant biomass while protecting bare soil, suppressing weeds and adding valuable organic matter. As a legume, it forms a symbiotic relationship with beneficial soil bacteria to fix atmospheric nitrogen through its root nodules, helping build soil fertility for following crops.

It is also well suited to fodder and mixed pasture systems, while the vivid flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. Crimson Clover works particularly well in orchards, between cropping rotations or mixed with grasses and other green manure species.

Sowing rate: approximately 2–4 kg/ha

Planting / Sowing

Broadcast over prepared soil and lightly rake into the surface, or sow approximately 5–10 mm deep. Keep moist during germination and establishment.

For green manure, cut at or around flowering, before mature seed is produced, and leave the foliage on the surface as mulch or incorporate it into the soil. Allow time for the organic matter to begin breaking down before planting the following crop.

For maximum nitrogen fixation, treat seed with the appropriate Clover inoculant where compatible rhizobia are not already established in the soil.

Due to quarantine restrictions in W.A. there is a 10,000 seeds limit per each variety.
