Pisum sativum

Dun Pea is a hardy, cool-season field pea grown primarily as a green manure and cover crop, producing good biomass while helping protect and improve the soil. As a legume, it works with beneficial soil bacteria to fix atmospheric nitrogen, making it particularly useful in crop rotations and for building fertility ahead of spring and summer plantings.

It can also be grown as a forage crop for late-winter grazing. Sow through autumn and winter for strong cool-season growth.

Sowing rate: approximately 30–40 kg/ha

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to winter
Mild climates: Autumn to winter
Cold climates: Autumn to early spring

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly into prepared soil approximately 2–5 cm deep. For green manure, cut before seed matures and leave the growth on the soil as mulch or incorporate it into the soil before the following crop.

For maximum nitrogen fixation, treat seed with the appropriate pea inoculant where compatible rhizobia are not already established in the soil.

Not available for TAS. Due to quarantine restrictions, WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
