Arachis hypogaea

Virginia Bunch is a productive heirloom peanut variety producing very large, flavourful kernels with good disease resistance. Compact, low-growing plants develop attractive yellow pea-like flowers before the flower stalk bends towards the soil, where the peanuts mature underground – one of the most fascinating growth habits in the vegetable garden.

Well suited to warm climates with at least five frost-free months, Virginia Bunch can be grown from southern New South Wales through to northern Australia. Its spreading habit also makes it an excellent living mulch beneath taller crops such as sweet corn, helping shade the soil while fixing atmospheric nitrogen through its root nodules.

Harvest once the foliage begins to yellow and dry, then cure the pods thoroughly before storage. Fresh or roasted, Virginia Bunch is an excellent variety for home growers wanting both productivity and flavour.

Seed count: approximately 1.5 seeds/g

Approximately 7 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Spring to summer

Subtropics: Spring to early summer

Mild climates: Late spring to summer

Cold climates: Spring after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow directly into warm, well-drained soil approximately 3–5 cm deep once all danger of frost has passed. Space plants 20–30 cm apart in full sun and keep consistently watered during flowering and pod development.

For maximum nitrogen fixation, treat seed with the appropriate Peanut inoculant where compatible rhizobia are not already established in the soil.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
