Lactuca sativa

Marvel of Four Seasons is a beautiful French heirloom lettuce prized for its richly coloured leaves and excellent flavour. The tender foliage develops shades of green, bronze and deep burgundy-red, creating an attractive contrast that makes this variety particularly valuable in baby leaf and microgreen mixes.

Young leaves are soft, succulent and mildly sweet, with a delicate buttery texture. They are excellent in salads, sandwiches and wraps or combined with other baby greens for colourful mixed-leaf harvests. The intensity of the red colouring can vary with growing conditions, with cooler temperatures often producing deeper tones.

Known in France as Merveille des Quatre Saisons, this historic butterhead lettuce has been cultivated since at least the nineteenth century. Its beauty, flavour and adaptability have ensured its continued popularity with home gardeners and market growers.

Planting / Sowing

For microgreens, sow seed densely over a moist growing medium and lightly press into the surface. Cover only very lightly, as lettuce seed benefits from light during germination. Keep evenly moist and provide bright light and good airflow once seedlings emerge.

For baby leaf production, sow more thinly in trays, containers or garden beds. Harvest young leaves when they reach approximately 8–15 cm tall. Cut above the growing point where possible to encourage regrowth and additional harvests.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
