Fagopyrum esculentum

Buckwheat Microgreens produce tender, vibrant green shoots with a fresh flavour and crisp texture, making them a popular choice for salads, sandwiches, wraps and juicing. Often referred to as buckwheat lettuce when grown as young seedlings, they are quick to establish and produce an abundant harvest in a short period.

Unhulled buckwheat seed can be grown in trays in a similar manner to wheatgrass, producing attractive leafy greens that are both productive and easy to grow. The young shoots develop rapidly in warm conditions and are well suited to home and commercial microgreen production.

Buckwheat performs best during the warmer months, with germination and growth significantly improved by consistent temperatures. It is an excellent option for growers seeking fast-growing, nutrient-dense greens throughout spring, summer and autumn.

Approximately 45 seeds per gram

Microgreens & Baby Leaf Production: Best grown in warm conditions

Tropics: Year round
Subtropics: Spring to autumn
Mild climates: Spring to autumn
Cold climates: Spring and summer

Planting / Sowing

For microgreens, sow unhulled seed densely over a moist growing medium and gently press into the surface. Lightly cover if desired and keep evenly moist throughout germination.

Buckwheat germinates best at temperatures between 20–25°C. Avoid winter sowing or cold conditions, as germination and growth can be poor. Provide bright light and good airflow once seedlings emerge.

Harvest with scissors when the seedlings have developed their first leaves, typically 8–14 days after sowing. Regular watering and warm conditions will produce the best quality crop.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
