Brassica juncea

Giant Curled is a vigorous Mustard Green producing generous crops of large, deep green leaves with beautifully curled and frilled edges. Fast growing, hardy and productive, it is an excellent leafy vegetable for gardeners wanting substantial harvests from a relatively small area.

The leaves have a pleasantly mild mustard flavour when young, developing a little more pungency as they mature. Baby leaves can be eaten fresh in salads and sandwiches, while larger leaves are excellent steamed, sautéed or braised, or added to soups, curries and stir-fries. Cooking softens both the texture and characteristic mustard heat.

Mustard greens have been cultivated for thousands of years, particularly throughout Asia, where Brassica juncea developed into an enormous diversity of leafy, stem and root vegetables. Their rapid growth and ability to provide repeated harvests have made them an important cool-season green across many food cultures.

Giant Curled is particularly useful in warmer areas, where it shows better tolerance of heat than many cool-season leafy greens. Regular harvesting of the outer leaves encourages plants to continue producing from the centre.

Approximately 130 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Autumn to spring
Mild climates: Autumn to spring
Cold climates: Spring to autumn

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 5–10 mm deep directly into prepared soil or raise in trays for transplanting. Keep consistently moist during germination.

Space plants approximately 20–30 cm apart for mature plants, or sow more closely for baby-leaf production. Grow in full sun during cooler weather, with some afternoon shade beneficial as temperatures increase.

Mustard greens prefer fertile, well-drained soil and consistent moisture for rapid, tender growth. Begin harvesting young leaves as required or allow plants to develop their characteristic large, deeply frilled foliage. Leave the central growing point intact when harvesting individual leaves for continued production.

If saving seed, Giant Curled can cross-pollinate with other Brassica juncea varieties flowering at the same time, so appropriate isolation is required to maintain the variety true to type.

Maturity: approximately 50 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
