Abelmoschus esculentus

Beck's Big Buck Horn is a remarkable heirloom okra variety with a history as memorable as the plant itself. Producing large, tender pods that remain flavourful and succulent even when allowed to grow beyond the size at which most okra becomes tough, this variety has earned a loyal following among gardeners and cooks alike.

Originally from Germany and brought to the United States before World War II, the seed was reportedly smuggled inside a camera by a German immigrant. The variety was later rediscovered growing wild on the property of renowned organic gardening pioneer Malcolm Beck in San Antonio, Texas, who helped preserve and share it with future generations. Also known as "Snapping Okra" for the distinctive snap made when harvesting fresh pods, it has become celebrated for its productivity, resilience and outstanding eating quality.

Vigorous plants can reach up to 1.8 metres (6 feet) tall and thrive in hot, sunny conditions. The large pods are excellent for frying, stewing, pickling, gumbo and a wide range of traditional okra dishes. Combining fascinating history with exceptional garden performance, Beck's Big Buck Horn is a standout addition to any vegetable patch.

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed 15–20 mm deep directly into warm, well-prepared soil once temperatures have consistently warmed. For faster germination, soak seed overnight before planting. Space plants 40–60 cm apart in rows 75–100 cm apart.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Water regularly during establishment, then deeply during dry periods. Harvest pods frequently while young and tender to encourage continued production, although this variety remains tender at a larger size than most okra. Regular picking will keep plants productive throughout the growing season.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
