Abelmoschus esculentus

Clemson Spineless is one of the world's most popular okra varieties, prized for its reliable performance, prolific yields and exceptional eating quality. Producing uniform, dark green pods on vigorous plants, this classic heirloom has been a favourite among home gardeners and market growers for generations.

As its name suggests, the pods are virtually spineless, making harvesting and preparation far more comfortable than many traditional okra varieties. The slender, tender pods are best picked when they reach 7–8 cm in length, delivering excellent flavour and texture for frying, stewing, gumbo, soups and pickling.

Highly productive and easy to grow, Clemson Spineless thrives in hot weather and rewards gardeners with continuous harvests throughout the growing season. Its dependable growth, fine quality pods and heavy yields have made it the benchmark variety against which many other okras are measured.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: September to March
Subtropics: October to January
Mild climates: October to December
Cold climates: Late spring to early summer after frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed 15–20 mm deep directly into warm, fertile soil once all danger of frost has passed. For faster germination, soak seed overnight before planting. Space plants 40–60 cm apart in rows 75–100 cm apart.

Grow in full sun in well-drained soil enriched with compost. Water regularly during establishment and throughout dry periods. Harvest pods frequently while young and tender at 7–8 cm long to encourage continuous flowering and heavy production. Plants typically reach maturity in approximately 80 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
