Abelmoschus esculentus

Emerald is a classic American Okra producing smooth, straight, deep green pods with excellent tenderness and uniformity. Developed in the United States in the 1950s by the Campbell Soup Company, it was selected specifically for reliable yields, consistent pod shape and good eating quality for commercial processing.

Its smooth, spineless pods are particularly pleasant to harvest and handle. For the best texture, pick them young at approximately 7–10 cm long, before the pods begin to toughen. Emerald holds its texture well during cooking and is excellent fried, grilled, roasted or pickled, or added to curries, soups and stews. Okra is also famous as an ingredient in gumbo, where its natural mucilage acts as a thickener.

Okra has ancient origins in Africa, with Ethiopia and the surrounding region frequently associated with its early history. From Africa it spread through the Middle East, India and the Mediterranean before becoming an important vegetable throughout tropical and subtropical cuisines around the world.

Plants are vigorous warm-season annuals with attractive hibiscus-like flowers followed by abundant green pods. Emerald was bred for dependable production and remains popular with both commercial growers and home gardeners decades after its introduction.

A true heat-loving crop, Okra thrives in warm soil, full sun and a long growing season. Regular picking is important, as pods develop quickly in hot weather and frequent harvesting encourages continued flowering and production.

Seed count: approximately 16 seeds/g
Approximately 30 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Spring to autumn
Subtropics: Spring to summer
Mild climates: Late spring to early summer
Cold climates: Start indoors in spring and transplant after all danger of frost

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 15–20 mm deep directly into warm, well-prepared soil after all danger of frost has passed. In cooler districts, seed can be started indoors to extend the growing season.

Space plants approximately 40–60 cm apart in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Maintain consistent moisture during establishment, flowering and pod development, although established plants cope particularly well with hot conditions.

Harvest pods regularly at approximately 7–10 cm long while they remain smooth and tender. Check plants frequently during warm weather, as pods can grow remarkably quickly and become fibrous if left too long.

Allow pods to mature and dry completely on the plant when growing for seed.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
