Allium cepa

Amposta Purple is a beautiful Spanish heirloom Onion producing medium to large, globe-shaped bulbs with rich reddish-purple to bronze skins. Cut open, the bulbs reveal attractive concentric rings of red-purple and white, making this an especially striking onion for fresh use.

Also known as Morada de Amposta and Bronze d’Amposta, the variety takes its name from Amposta, a town in Catalonia in north-eastern Spain. It is prized for its mild, pleasantly sweet flavour and relatively gentle onion pungency, making it particularly good sliced raw into salads, sandwiches and salsas. The bulbs are equally useful roasted, grilled, caramelised or incorporated into everyday cooking.

Amposta Purple is an intermediate-day onion, beginning to form bulbs when day length reaches approximately 12–14 hours. This makes day length and latitude important considerations when deciding where and when to grow it successfully.

Onions have been cultivated since ancient times, with their origins generally traced to Central and Southwest Asia. Their ability to store, travel and provide flavour made them an important food crop throughout the ancient world and eventually gave rise to an enormous diversity of regional varieties.

Plants perform best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Steady growth and consistent moisture during active development encourage good bulb formation, but avoid excessive fertilising and waterlogged conditions.

Seed count: approximately 240–400 seeds/g
Approximately 100 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Generally not ideally suited due to day-length requirements
Subtropics: Autumn to winter; suitability varies with latitude
Mild climates: Autumn to winter
Cold climates: Autumn to winter, according to local onion-growing conditions

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 5–10 mm deep into prepared soil, seedbeds or trays. Keep consistently moist and provide some shade over the seedbed until germination is well established.

Transplant or thin seedlings to approximately 10–15 cm apart. Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil and maintain even moisture during active growth and bulb development.

As an intermediate-day variety, Amposta Purple requires approximately 12–14 hours of daylight to initiate good bulb formation, so performance will vary according to latitude and planting time.

Reduce watering as the bulbs mature. Harvest when the tops naturally yellow, dry and fall over. Lift carefully and cure thoroughly in a dry, well-ventilated position before storing.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
