Pisum sativum

Novella Leafless is an unusual and highly productive Pea distinguished by masses of strong, curling tendrils in place of the broad leaves found on conventional pea plants. This distinctive growth habit allows the plants to intertwine and support one another, forming compact, upright clumps approximately 50 cm tall that generally require no staking.

Plants produce heavy yields of medium-sized pods over a long harvesting season. The sweet green peas can be shelled and eaten fresh or lightly cooked and are excellent in soups, risottos, pasta and vegetable dishes. Surplus peas can also be blanched and frozen.

The abundant young tendrils are edible too. Harvest the tender growing tips for salads, garnishes and stir-fries, where they provide a fresh pea flavour and delicate crunch. Avoid removing too many shoots at once if the plants are being grown primarily for their pea crop.

Leafless or semi-leafless peas were developed by selecting plants in which much of the foliage is transformed into tendrils. Besides their striking appearance, the interlocking tendrils help plants remain upright and improve airflow through the crop.

Novella is quick to mature but continues producing over an extended period when pods are harvested regularly. Its compact size, self-supporting habit and dual-purpose harvest of peas and shoots make it particularly useful in smaller vegetable gardens.

Peas are among the world’s oldest cultivated food crops, originating in the Near East and grown since ancient times. Early peas were primarily harvested and dried for storage, with tender green peas becoming popular much later.

Seed count: approximately 3–5 seeds/g
Approximately 120 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: Autumn to winter
Subtropics: Late summer to autumn
Mild climates: Late summer to autumn
Cold climates: Spring, with autumn sowing possible in suitable areas

Planting / Sowing

Sow approximately 20–30 mm deep directly where plants are to grow. Peas generally dislike root disturbance, so direct sowing is preferred.

Space seeds approximately 5–10 cm apart. Plants grow to around 50 cm tall and their abundant tendrils intertwine with neighbouring plants, meaning staking is generally unnecessary.

Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Peas tolerate a range of soil types but dislike waterlogged conditions. Maintain consistent moisture during flowering and pod development.

Harvest tender young tendrils as required, or allow plants to concentrate their energy on pod production. Pick pods when plump and well filled but while the peas remain tender and sweet. Regular harvesting encourages continued production.

Maturity: approximately 64–70 days.

Due to quarantine restrictions, we cannot send Pea seeds to Tasmania and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
