Salvia apiana

White Sage, also known as Sacred Sage or Grandfather Sage, is a striking evergreen perennial shrub native to the dry regions of the American Southwest. Revered by many Indigenous peoples of North America, it has traditionally been used as a food source, medicinal plant and within cultural and ceremonial practices. Its distinctive silvery-white foliage is soft to the touch and releases a strong aromatic fragrance when brushed or crushed.

Growing to approximately 1.5 m tall, White Sage develops woody stems at the base with softer new growth toward the tips. Mature plants produce elegant flower spikes bearing clusters of small white flowers that are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. The silvery foliage provides year-round interest and makes an impressive feature in drought-tolerant gardens, rockeries and dry landscape plantings.

White Sage is perhaps best known for its aromatic leaves, which have traditionally been dried and used as incense. Today it is widely cultivated for its ornamental beauty, fragrance and cultural significance. As a desert-adapted species, it thrives in dry conditions and requires excellent drainage to perform well.

White Sage can be challenging to grow from seed and naturally exhibits lower germination rates than many other sages. Patience and careful attention to drainage are often rewarded with long-lived, highly ornamental plants.

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to June
Subtropics: August to October
Mild climates: August to November
Cold climates: September to November

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed on the surface of a well-draining cactus or native seed-raising mix and cover only very lightly. Keep the mix just moist, avoiding overwatering. Germination can be slow and irregular. Once seedlings are established, transplant into a full sun position with sandy, free-draining soil. Space plants 1–1.5 m apart. White Sage is highly drought tolerant once established and performs best on slopes, rocky sites and other well-drained locations.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
