Brassica rapa var. japonica

Mibuna is a traditional Japanese leafy green producing elegant, narrow leaves up to 45 cm long on upright, vigorous plants. Closely related to Mizuna, it offers a milder flavour and a more refined appearance, making it a favourite for salads, stir-fries and fresh seasonal harvests.

The tender leaves, young stems and flowering shoots are all edible and can be harvested from the seedling stage onwards. Young leaves add a mild mustard flavour and crisp texture to salads, while mature foliage is excellent lightly cooked in stir-fries, soups and steamed vegetable dishes. Regular harvesting encourages fresh growth and extends the productive season.

Mibuna thrives during the cooler months of the year and is valued for its rapid growth, versatility and ability to provide repeated harvests from a single planting. Its graceful appearance also makes it an attractive addition to edible gardens and mixed vegetable beds.

When to Plant (Australia)

Microgreens & Baby Leaf Production: Year round Australia-wide

Tropics: April to August
Subtropics: March to September
Mild climates: February to October
Cold climates: Autumn, winter and spring

Planting / Sowing

Sow seed 5 mm deep directly into prepared garden beds, containers or seedling trays. For baby leaf production, sow more densely and begin harvesting young leaves from the seedling stage. For mature plants, thin seedlings to 20–30 cm apart.

Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Keep soil evenly moist and harvest leaves, stems and flower shoots regularly to encourage continued production. Plants perform best in cool conditions and provide a long harvest period when picked often.

Baby Leaf and Microgreens offer a simple and nutritious way to add fresh homegrown greens, vitamins and minerals to your daily diet.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
