Helianthus annuus

Giant Russian is a classic heirloom sunflower that grows 2.5–3 metres tall and produces enormous flower heads up to 30 cm across. Native to the Americas, sunflowers have long been valued for their beauty, edible seeds and high-quality oil. This impressive variety makes a striking feature in the garden, provides valuable nectar for bees and other pollinators, and produces seed heads that are enjoyed by birds and can be harvested for roasting or sprouting. Its deep root system also helps improve soil structure by aerating the ground and drawing nutrients from deeper soil layers.

Approximately 15–20 seeds per gram
Approximately 15 seeds per packet

When to Plant (Australia)

Tropics: April to August (dry season)
Subtropics: August to January
Mild climates: September to January
Cold climates: Spring to early summer

Planting / Sowing

Direct sow seed 20–25 mm deep into fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position after the danger of frost has passed. Space plants 45–60 cm apart. Sunflowers thrive in warm weather and tolerate hot, dry conditions once established, although regular watering during flowering will encourage larger blooms. Harvest flowers from around 60–75 days, or allow seed heads to fully mature before collecting seeds for eating, sprouting or saving.

Due to quarantine restrictions, TAS has an 800g limit per each seed variety and WA has a 10,000 seeds limit per variety.
